About

This website was created to distill biological facts upon the world wide web.  As a biologist, and a kid at heart I wanted to create a space where you could just sit back and read about the amazing things found in this natural world.  This website is dedicated to distilling down the newest research, answering biological questions, and just telling it like it is in layman’s terms.

    Hi Jon,

Since you said that the Honey Locust is your favorite tree, maybe you can help me identify this wild tree growing in my yard:
    * the leaf looks like one from a Honey Locust or a Silk Tree
    * but some leaves are simple leaves (instead of components), others start as simple leaves but switches to component leaves mid-length (really surprising, first time ever I have seen this). But most of the leaves are doubly components
    * Leaves stayed green the whole winter
    * I am living in California, Palo Alto. Since this is a suburban area, there is some chance that this tree is not native from here
    * The tree is 2-3 years old, so haven’t produced any fruits yet

Any clue which tree this could be?
Since it is still pretty short, it may not be a tree but a bush instead. But the way it is growing up, I would bet more on a tree.

Happy to send you a picture of the leaves.

Thanks for your help is this message reaches you!
    – Marco
